Germ-based diseases have shaped human history. From influenza, smallpox, plague, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS to Corona now; the pandemic infections have always resulted in high morbidity and mortality throughout the world.

According to World Health Report 1996, nearly 50,000 people die each day from such infectious disease. These numbers have surely spiked now. The disease-causing germs get inside the body through nose, mouth, eyes, privates, or breaks in skin; breeds very quickly and in a very short span of time, become millions- stopping the body to work at its optimum.

“We are standing on the brink of a global crisis in infectious diseases. No country is safe from them. No country can longer afford to ignore their threat,” the Director-General of WHO-Hiroshi Nakajima says in a report.

So how to stay safe from a germ attack.

Start here.

1. Good Hygiene:

First and foremost is to maintain good hygiene as it defuses the chances of further transmission of germs.

  • Wash hands properly: Maximum transmission of germs are through hands.
  • So, wash hands after using the restroom
  • Before preparing or eating food
  • After coughing, sneezing and stroking your pet
  • After visiting a sick person

Do not share eating plate, glass, straw and other such personal items.

Do not share tissue, napkin, handkerchief.

2. Food Hygiene

It is absolutely imperative to kill the microbes that are present in the food as well as to avoid the introduction of new microbes to the food.

  • Rinse the raw fruit and vegetable properly before cooking.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before you finally set to cook.
  • Keep raw food and cooked food separate.
  • Do not leave cooked food open.
  • Cook fresh every day.
  • If possible, do not eat stale, previous days food.

3. Clean, sanitize or disinfect the commonly used surface

Post personal and food hygiene, what really counts is to create germ-free surrounding. Living area surface that may appear shiny and neat may actually house billions of microscopic germs. Cleaning with soap and water may not be enough. Sanitizing or disinfecting the area as per the need and use is highly recommended. This kills or reduces the growth of microbes.
